Left Side Heart Pump Improves Right Side of Heart

Posted on Jun 16, 2010

If you suffer from a disorder related to the cardiovascular system, the Social Security Administration may provide disability benefits. Heart disease is one of the leading causes of claims for Social Security disability benefits. The effects of heart disease can be debilitating and leave an individual unable to work.

Science Daily
reports that recently, a left side heart pump meant to help patients with damage to that side has been found to also improve performance of the right side of the heart. This heart pump was designed to provide a continuous flow of blood for those suffering from end-stage cardiac disease.

This left ventricular assist device (LVAD) called "HeartMate II" has been used to treat patients who are not candidates to receive a heart transplant. This device is implanted right below the heart and is then connected to the left ventricle. It helps provide a constant flow of blood. An unexpected, but certainly welcome, finding indicates that the pump also improves the function of the right side.

If you or someone you love suffers from heart disease or any other disorder related to the cardiovascular system, you may be eligible to receive Social Security disability benefits. Contact a Social Security disability attorney who can help you determine eligibility and assist you through the claims process.
