Molecular Imaging May Help Renal Transplant Complications

Kidney disease can lead to the need for a kidney transplant. It is estimated that more than 15,000 people in the United States receive a kidney transplant every year. Receiving a transplant can eliminate the need for kidney dialysis; however, complications can develop after receiving a transplant.
The Society of Nuclear Medicine's 57th Annual Meeting presented a new study that renal transplant complications may be helped with molecular imaging. Using structural and physiological imaging could lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of renal-transplant complications.
Some of the complications from kidney transplants may include:
- Urinary leakage;
- Kidney failure/transplant non-viability; and
- Infection.
Increases in technology can lead to better diagnostic capabilities. Physicians are given greater opportunities to treat renal-transplant related complications. Currently, 2-dimensional planar imaging is used. However, using 3-dimensional SPECT/CT hybrid imaging provides greater insight.
The National Kidney Foundation reports that 26 million people in the United States suffer from chronic kidney disease. The number of kidney transplants continues to increase.
