November 7, 2011 - Ivacaftor is the latest cystic fibrosis drug to be in the spotlight after showing great promise in clinical trials. Cystic fibrosis is a disabling and often fatal condition that affects patients from birth, which can give you the right to collect disability benefits.
The Los Angeles Times reports that unlike prior cystic fibrosis drug trials which focused on alleviating symptoms, Ivacaftor attacks the disease at the very root of the problem by opening the delivery channels that supply chloride to the body to produce salt and help regulate the flow of water to vital organs.
The clinical trials of Ivacaftor have so far helped patients regulate their digestive systems better and improve lung function to near normal levels. It also reduced the occurrence of pulmonary exacerbations by 55 percent compared to the placebo. Over 150 patients studied in one trial reported a 10.4 percent improvement in lung function and a gain of 6 pounds due to better nutritional intake over the 48 week study.
The drug so far only helps with a genetic mutation that impairs around 5 percent of those with cystic fibrosis, but researchers are looking to develop another similar medication that could work in tandem with Ivacaftor to help patients without the gene mutation. Ivacaftor is currently under review by the Food and Drug Administration and may gain approval by 2012.
