New Drug Combinations May Treat Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia

Posted on Aug 05, 2010

Leukemia is a serious cancer that can lead to a person becoming disabled and possibly being eligible for Social Security disability benefits

Now researchers have found that new drug combinations may treat Chronic M
yelogenous Leukemia (CML), the deadliest form of leukemia. The study which was published in the journal Cancer Cell, reports that this drug combination effectively targets leukemia stem cells that are typically resistant to standard types of treatment.

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDACi) may be the answer for treatment of CML. HDACi has been used to treat a variety of other cancers and recent studies show that they may be effective in destroying CML stem cells.

Combining HDCACi with the standard form of treatment reduced CML cells effectively, as compared to those who received just the standard form of treatment.

Currently clinical development with several HDCAi is taking place and with these newest studies, it supports the go ahead for clinical trials. Researchers will continue to look into the benefits of these inhibitors in treating this type of leukemia.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with leukemia or any other severe mental or physical disability then you may qualify for Social Security disability benefits. Contact a South Florida Social Security lawyer who can determine if you are eligible for these benefits and assist you in the process of obtaining disability benefits.
