According to the Doctor’s Lounge, a new multikinase inhibitor may extend survival in patients with advanced colorectal cancer. Social Security disability benefits may be available if a severe condition has caused significant impairment and an inability to work.
Regorafenib, an experimental drug, is found to slightly extend the life of a patient with metastatic colorectal cancer. It was tested on patients who had exhausted all other treatment options yet their cancer remained.
In comparison to those patients who had tried a placebo and lived for an additional 5 months, those who took regorafenib lived an average of 6.4 months. This amounts to a 29 percent increase in survival.
Additionally, compared to 15 percent of patients who took a placebo and responded well or experienced a reduction in progression, 44 percent of those who took regorafenib experienced a reduction.
The trial was stopped in October so that all of the patients participating could receive the drug. Although the life expectancy gains weren’t significant, there’s hope that taking the drug earlier could provide better results. The experimental drug has now moved to the second phase in clinical trials with patients.
