The new GI Bill is going into affect next month. In August the bill will expand the benefits for all who have served since September 11, 2001. The new GI Bill will pay full tuition for a public university or community college. It also gives each service member $1000 a year for books and supplies.
In addition, a monthly housing allowance will give qualifying members between $1200 and $2500. The benefits are good for 36 months for anyone who served for at least 36 months.
One veteran who is looking forward to the changes is Justin Scribner of Port St. Lucie. Scribner served in Afghanistan and he believes that the changes will allow him more time to finish school.
"Now my GI Bill (educational benefits) would end in December 2012, but say I get pushed back a semester because I have to have surgery, this new bill will give me until December 2013 to finish school."
The new bill will take some of the leg work out of paying for college. It will allow the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs to pay the college directly instead of sending out checks to the veterans. In the past the veterans had to then pass the money on to the school. The new system will save everyone involved time and money.
