An international study found that an oral drug, lenalidomide, may treat aggressive lymphoma. Patients with transformed lymphoma, which is considered to be an aggressive form of blood cancer, typically have a median survival rate of 1.7 years.
However, 45% of patients diagnosed with transformed lymphoma who were treated with lenalidomide responded favorably. Of those patients, 21% of them demonstrated complete remission. In some cases that remission lasted for over a year.
While the study itself was small, doctors are optimistic about the use of the drug due to its promising response rate as well as the simplicity of the treatment itself.
In addition, this oral drug is approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and is used to treat certain types of myelodysplastic syndrome and myeloma. It is considered easy to take and has minimal side affects.
Researchers will continue further studies to evaluate its affects on patients with transformed lymphoma.
