A local woman has been recognized by Florida Gov. Charlie Crist. Julie Ryczek of Treasure Island was given the Point of Light award in honor of Fitness/Nutrition Awareness month.
Ryczek has served her community for over 25 years. She has worked tirelessly, spreading the word about the dangers of childhood obesity. Children who are obese can suffer from lifelong problems with hypertension, diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
The Point of Light program was designed to recognize Florida citizens who go above and beyond in helping their communities. Awards are given out weekly during the month long event. Julie Ryczek certainly fits the bill. According to Crist,
"Julie tirelessly volunteers in her community as a wellness coordinator with Pinellas County Schools, and she works to educate and inspire people to make lifelong healthy choices."
Ryczek has made a difference not only in her community but throughout the state. Her efforts have earned her a spot on the Governor's Council on Physical Fitness.
Locally, Ryczek serves as a community leader. She volunteers with organizations such as the Kiwanis Club, Pinellas On the Move, Children's Dream Fund, Healthy Kids Day, Safe Kids Coalition and the Susan G. Koman Foundation.
In addition, Ryczek writes for five different publications and has been featured on several news stations. Her message can do nothing but help Florida and its youth gain a new perspective on healthy living.
