Venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a hematological disorder wherein blood clots occur in the veins. It consists of deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which is a clot formed deep in the vein, most often in the leg or pelvis. Known as pulmonary embolism (PE), a dislodged DVT can travel throughout the body, including the heart and lungs, where it can become lodged.
VTE can be a serious, or even fatal, blood disorder. To learn more about hematological disorders visit our article library. A new study has indicated that risk factors for venous thromboembolism vary between ethnicities. Of those diagnosed with VTE, African Americans showed to have a much higher risk of pulmonary embolism than Caucasians.
Researchers are now looking at why this is the case, as pulmonary embolism can often lead to death. In addition, it was found that African Americans also had a higher risk of complications after VTE and higher risk of dying from PE.
