Scientists Hope to Cure Deafness

ScienceDaily reports that there may be good news on the horizon for those who suffer from hearing loss. Scientists hope to cure deafness by creating the first inner-ear cells. These hair cells-placed deep inside the ears-could detect vibrations in the air which would then translate into sound.
This idea was first conceived about 10 years ago and it seems after years of lab work, researchers may have found a way to artificially develop mouse cells that act just like the inner-ear hair cells of the animal.
With further work, they may be on their way to finding a cure for deafness and applying this technology to use for humans. Of course, this could take another decade or more of work and research, but it provides hope for those who deal with hearing loss.
Between age and noise pollution, human hair cells become damaged over time. It is estimated that 1 in 3 adults who are 65 years or older have developed hearing loss which can lead to disability.
