At least 30 homeless veterans were expected to visit a local church for the 11th annual Stand Down. Stand Downs are community-based gatherings that offer support services for homeless veterans. The gatherings occur nationwide and are an excellent chance for homeless veterans to get some much needed supplies, a hot meal and a haircut. Veterans are also given bus passes and phone cards.
One Army veteran, Tony B., attended the event to get much needed clothing and bedding.
"I'm used to this weather but it helps to have some warm clothes," he said.
For event organizers with the Pueblo County Homeless Veterans Coalition the events are a great way to help veterans who come for the most basic necessities and services.
Dave Marrero is a local veteran who was on hand to help. He expected a similar number of veterans as he had seen in other years. However, the demographics of the group are changing.
"The only difference is we're starting to see a lot younger veterans coming through. Today, we had at least one that I know just came back from Iraq."
