Transitional Home Will House Homeless Women Veterans, Children

Posted on Jan 25, 2010

A 8,486-square-foot women's shelter will soon be under construction in Cocoa, Florida.  On any given day the transitional home will be able to hold up to 28 homeless women veterans and their children.

The complex will contain seven units with two bedrooms per unit.  Common living and dining areas will be provided, along with substance abuse and mental health disorder services.

The transitional house, called the Center for Drug Free Living in Cocoa, is being funded by a grant from the Department of Veterans Affairs, local funding and a large private donation.

Babette Hankey is the chief operating officer for the center.  She and other saw a need and acted.

"We saw these servicemen and women coming back, needing these services," said Hankey. "We believe that it would be a disservice to our area to not help those why are doing so much for our country."

The same organization will also be opening a male homeless veterans center near Orlando.

Current studies show that an estimated one-third of the homeless population has served in the military.  This means that about 131,000 veterans are homeless on any given night.

Women who choose to live in the shelter receive housing and services for up to two years.   When the women are ready the center will help them begin the process of living on their own.

The attorneys and staff at LaVan & Neidenberg would like to applaud this effort to help women veterans get back on their feet and look forward to seeing all the positive changes that come from its services.
