As a disabled veteran it can be difficult to get back on track with your life. One program through the University of Arizona is attempting to help veterans do just that. In May the school welcomed over 20 disabled veterans to their campus to learn more about adaptive athletics and higher education.
Disabled veterans from as far away as Puerto Rico and Florida attended the camp titled, "Guide to Personal Success: Ultimate Athletics Experience," or GPS. The program is funded by the U of A's Disabled Veterans Reintegration and Education Project.
Amanda Kraus is the director of the project and says that the UA, with its unique competitive collegiate adaptive athletics program is a great place for disabled veterans to compete and continue their higher education.
"I've worked with some of our disabled veterans on our sports teams and from what I understand from them they have said they wouldn't be in college if it wasn't for our sports," Kraus said. "So I think that is really powerful."
The GPS camp goes beyond sports. It aims to make the process of transitioning into higher education easier to understand. UA staff members were on hand to help explain the new GI Bill, admissions, financial aid and campus resources.
