At the beginning of the AIDS epidemic in 1981, Fernando Castillo was the chef at San Francisco's Casa de Cristal.
When Jorge, one of his cooks, became ill, Fernando took him to the hospital and held his hand as Jorge became the third person in the city to be diagnosed with what eventually became known as AIDS. Jorge died two years later.
By that time, Fernando had watched 60 more of his friends fall ill with AIDS, including his partner, Tom. Fernando's life became an endless circuit between hospitals and funeral parlors. Horribly depressed, he seemed to lose his will to live. But Tom, near death, made Fernando promise to be strong, to live, to fight and to help others.
For more than 20 years, Fernando has lived up to that promise.
