U.S. Task Force Recommends Men Avoid Prostate Cancer Screening

Posted on Oct 13, 2011

According to a report from CNN Health, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force is now recommending men avoid prostate cancer screenings. You could be entitled to Social Security disability benefits if you were diagnosed with a severe medical condition, such as cancer, that prevents you from working.

These new recommendations are met with opposition, particularly by the Prostate Cancer Foundation.
The U.S. Task Force is the same group who recommended that women in their 40s needn't undergo a mammogram.

Their recommendations are based upon 2 main factors. First, the dangers of serious side effects are greater than the benefits of undergoing screening. Second, the other is that prostate cancer screening doesn't significantly reduce the number of deaths, so it is unnecessary.

Side effects, such as impotency and incontinence, can be life-altering but may be unnecessary in some cases if screening indicates the need for treatment but it's not really the case. This is a concern for some when it comes to prostate cancer screening.

Despite the potential risks, most medical experts believe that screening for prostate cancer is important and necessary.
