Click To Call Veterans living in Florida have many concerns. Veterans groups have been asking Congress to shorten the backlog for disability claims. In addition there are concerns that veterans could face cuts in their healthcare benefits as changes in Medicare may affect TRICARE recipients. Veterans’ advocacy groups will be meeting with the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee to air their concerns.

Veterans Wary of Changes to TRICARE, Want Disability Claims Expedited

Posted on Jan 30, 2010

Any veteran waiting to hear about their VA disability claim can tell you that the wait, up to a year, is frustrating.  Veterans' advocates are attempting to get Congress to expedite the backlogged claims.  Rep. Jeff Miller of Florida is a House Veterans' Affairs Committee member.  He has met with VA officials to try and determine the best way to get veterans the compensation they need.

"The disability-claims backlog has become a deteriorating issue for the Department of Veterans Affairs and is in much need of improvement," Miller said.

A spending bill approved by Congress in December was aimed at helping reduce disabled veterans' wait time.  The $1.7 billion was to be used to hire 1,200 new claims processors.  The goal of the spending bill was to reduce a backlog that had nearly 400,000 claims pending.

According to the Governmental Accountability Office when the number of claims grew by almost half from 2003 to 2006 the average wait time for an appeal was 657 days. Wait times have not improved much and the vast majority of VA disability claims are denied the first time they are filed.  The wait time on an initial decision and a subsequent appeal means that disabled veterans are waiting many years just to be denied again.

Hopefully the roundtable discussion with the House Veterans' Affairs Committee will result in shorter waits for disabled veterans across the county.
