Waiting to Treat High Blood Pressure Isn’t Harmful for Diabetics

Posted on Jan 20, 2012

In a report from Medline Plus, waiting to treat high blood pressure isn’t found to be harmful for diabetics. If you’re no longer able to work due to a severe medical condition, you should seek help from a Florida Social Security disability attorney to learn if you qualify for disability benefits.

New research shows that those with diabetes can wait as long as 1 year before receiving treatment for high blood pressure. On the other hand, waiting too many years could lead to serious complications.

If diabetics opt to wait, they’re encouraged to make necessary lifestyle changes that  is shown to lower blood pressure like:

  • losing weight;
  • limiting the amount of salt in their diets; and
  • exercising.
Although this research indicates that it’s safe to wait, other experts believe that if blood pressure isn’t brought under control right away, it could lead to serious heart complications.

Some of the potential risks of an individual with diabetes waiting to treat high blood pressure include:
  • developing kidney disease;
  • developing heart disease; and/or
  • suffering a stroke.
Patients should consult with their doctors about the best treatment plan. To learn if you qualify to receive disability benefits, seek assistance from a Florida Social Security disability attorney as soon as possible. An attorney may be able to assist you with the initial application or appeal of a claim that has been denied.
