For many women veterans their battles do not end when they return from Iraq and Afghanistan. When they return they are often overlooked while their male counterparts receive recognition. Even when people know they are veterans they are assumed to have stayed on base, away from the action.
"People didn't come up to us and thank us for our service in the same way. They didn't give us free beers in bars the same way when we first got back." said former Army Sgt. Kayla Williams, an Iraq war veteran.
Even the VA can underestimate the role women play in today's military. Rachel McNeill was a gunner during convoys in Iraq. She still suffers from postconcussive headaches and ringing in her ears from roadside bombs. When she went to the VA in Madison, Wi. her story was interpreted differently on her paperwork.
"It would say like, ‘the patient rode along on convoys,' like I was just a passenger in the back seat," McNeill said.
In response to her feelings of isolation Genevieve Chase of Alexandria, Va., got together with some other female veterans to start a support network. What started with brunch has expanded into the American Women Veterans which is over 2000 members strong.
"We just want to know that when we come home, America has our back," Chase said. "That's the biggest thing. Women are over there. You want to feel like you're coming home to open arms rather than a public that doesn't acknowledge you for what you've just done and what you just sacrificed."
