Yellow Ribbon Program Helps Improve Post 9/11 GI Bill

Posted on Jul 30, 2009

With the new GI Bill set to begin in only a few days, some students still have concerns about the coverage the bill provides.  The benefits a veteran receives can vary from state to state.  The problem is that if a veteran lives in certain states going to the institution of their choice will cost them.

The Yellow Ribbon Program is a provision of the new bill that addresses this issue.  This provision will try and make up the gap between funding from state to state.  Through this program colleges like Westminster College in Utah are setting aside 100 spots in the incoming class for veterans.

In addition, many schools, both private and state funded, are doing all they can to help integrate the veteran population into the current student body.  Some colleges have added counselors to help veterans adjust to civilian life and deal with issues such as post traumatic stress disorder.

Veteran only classes are being created to give former service members an opportunity to support and motivate each other through their shared experiences and struggles.  This idea comes from a model created at Cleveland State University in 2007.
