Tammy Duckworth, a wounded Iraq war veteran, is using her "bonus time", as she calls it, to fight for veterans' rights and benefits. Within 48 hours of her hospital discharge, she announced her bid for Congress. Though she fell short on Election Day by a tiny margin, then Illinois governor, appointed Tammy as the State's Director of Veterans Affairs - her first call to action? To fix the disparities in the VA's disability rating system.
"There are so many kids right now with brain injuries, with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), who have maybe six months in the Army before they were injured -- they don't understand the bureaucracy -- they don't understand the system -- they don't have the experience. And, if they have a brain injury, then it's their 20-year old bride who's got an 8-month old baby trying to negotiate the system. They can't fight for themselves. We have to do this - we have to fight for them", says Tammy with the upmost conviction in her voice.
"People are going to forget. It happens after every single war, Tammy says with lament, which is why right now, I'm going to fight as hard as I can to make sure that we set it up so that when we start forgetting about war, and we should, who wants a country that's at war all the time? But, let's remember the veterans."
